Abstract
Various answers have been given to the question of what exactly being and becoming are in themselves and what kind of connection there is between them, according to various professions which are more or less related to each other, such as philosophy, science, theology, and tasawwuf. In this article, we are going to try to show that how Ibnu’l-Arabî and his followers have structured and interpreted the problematic connection between the being and becoming within the framework of the theory of the unity of the being through the doctrine of “alaʻyân al-thâbitah”. Our way of handling this problematic cannot be regarded as a kind of “meontology” because the dialectical relationship between “the same” and the “the other” in the works of Ibn-al-Arabî is not positioned according to an absolute and inexhaustible oppositional relationship. On the contrary, it is being presented in a way that we might call as “dialectic of the unification” (al-tawhîd). In this respect, we can draw special attention to the fact that the starting points of Ibn-al-Arabî’s metaphysical perspective are specifically based on prophethood and sainthood. In Ibn-al-Arabî School, the problematic connection between being and becoming is positioned, structured and resolved with “divine names”, “aptitude, ability/talent” (istiʻdâd), human’s identity, “special Lord”, “special direction” [to the God]. The problematic conclusion we reached regarding the doctrine is that the connection between being and becoming seems to be established a posteriori, but contrary to appearance, the destiny of becoming is actually related to the being “since eternity/eternally”.
