Abstract
Summary: We aimed to determine and compare serum lipids, fatty acids and MDA levels in diabetic and control subjects. Group A consisted of 22 males with type II diabetes (ages; 52.8 + 7.4) and Group B (control) consisted of 28 healthy men (ages; 48. 7 + 8. 0). Their serum fasting glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-, LDL-cholesterol and MDA levels were determined. In addition, their 14:0, 16:0, 16:1, 18:0, 18:1, 18:2$omega$6, 18:3$omega$6, 18:3$omega$3, 20:3$omega$6, 20: 4$omega$6 total fatty acids percentages were analyzed. Our results disclose higher levels of serum triglycérides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, MDA and the percentage of 14:0, 16:0, 18:1 fatty acids, and decreased levels of serum HDL-cholesterol as well as the percentage of 18:0, 18:2$omega$6 and 20: 4 coo fatty acids in comparison with the control group. There was a positive correlation between the levels of serum triglycerides and saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, and a negative correlation between the levels of serum triglycerides and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Besides, serum MDA levels showed a positive correlation with serum glucose levels. On the other hand, there was no any correlation between the levels of serum MDA and polyunsaturated fatty acids. We confirm that impaired carbohydrate metabolism worsens diabetic lipid profile by increasing the production of saturated fatty acids which are known to enhance atherosclerosis. In addition, increased lipid peroxidation is one of the contributor in progression of atherosclerosis in diabetics.
