Abstract
Objective: This study was undertaken by considering that an increased trophoblastic secretory response as the result of placental pathology in preeclamptic pregnancies could influence the maternal serum β-hCG level. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out at the ministry of health Ankara Hospital, antenatal clinic between 1995 and 1997. The third trimester maternal serum β-hCG values were measured in 30 normotensive. 22 mild and eight severe preeclamptic patients. Each group were compared statistically. Results: The maternal serum β-hCG level was determined to be 8.66±5.71 for the normotensive group, 20.93±7.9 for the mild preeclamptic group and 45.50±21.95 for the severe preeclamptic group. A statistically significant difference was observed among all groups (p < 0.05).Conclusion: It was observed that as preeclampsia became more severe, the maternal serum β-hCG levels increased, which supported the opinion that there is a placental pathology in the etiology of preeclampsia.
