Abstract
Ottoman history writing changed and transformed in the past twenty years. Poli- tical and institutional change that Turkey has gone through played an important role in this transformation as much as specific developments in social sciences. The number of publica- tions has increased along with the increasing numbers of universities and academic journals, primary sources have been used more frequently and efficiently, and the research topics have been diversified. However, the relationship of Ottoman history with other social scien- ce disciplines has also changed. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the relationship between Ottoman history and historical sociology from the perspective of historiography. The argument put forward is that, despite exceptions, Ottoman history severed its ties with historical sociology, especially after the 1990s. Therefore, Ottoman history, compared to the previous periods, is currently less comparative, less concerned with “big questions” and less critical with respect to the present. Consequently, Ottoman history writing is less engaged with other historiographical traditions and is subject to misunderstandings as well as super- ficial interpretations.
