The Pandemic and Journalism: A Review on Journalism Practices in Turkey in the Covid-19 Process

Pandemi ve Gazetecilik: Covid-19 Sürecinde Türkiye’deki Gazetecilik Pratikleri Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Epidemics are one of the main factors affecting the economic and social structures of societies and forcing changes in various ways. The Covid-19 pandemic, which has deeply affected the whole world for the last two years, has brought about serious changes and transformations in the structure of societies on a global scale. So much so that people's lifestyles, socialization levels and working conditions have changed. The profession of journalism, on the other hand, has become even more important in accessing accurate and reliable information in this challenging period. However, as in all other fields, journalism has been affected by the pandemic in various ways. During this period, a number of changes occurred both in journalism activities and in the working conditions of journalists. The aim of the study is to determine the changes and transformations in the working practices of journalists in Turkey during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this direction, interviews were conducted with people working in different branches of the media field in Turkey at the national and regional level, using maximum diversity sampling which is one of the purposive sampling methods. With the research, it has been determined that digital technologies provide a significant advantage to the field of journalism in the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, it has been seen that the use of new communication technologies in the media field during the Covid-19 pandemic period has made it necessary for journalists to learn to use digital technologies more functionally as a professional requirement. Also, as a result of the study, it was determined that the Covid-19 pandemic negatively affected the collective working style of journalists and individuality came to the fore.

Salgın hastalıklar, toplumların ekonomik ve sosyal yapılarını etkileyen, çeşitli şekillerde değişimlere zorlayan temel etmenlerden biridir. Son iki yıldır tüm dünyayı derin bir şekilde etkileyen Covid-19 pandemisi ise küresel ölçekte toplumların yapısında ciddi değişim ve dönüşümler meydana getirmiştir. Öyle ki, insanların yaşam biçimlerinin, sosyalleşme düzeylerinin ve çalışma koşullarının değişmesine neden olmuştur. Gazetecilik mesleği ise bu zorlu dönemde doğru ve güvenilir bilgiye erişme noktasında daha da önemli hâle gelmiştir. Ancak diğer tüm alanlarda olduğu gibi gazetecilik de pandemiden çeşitli şekillerde etkilenmiştir. Bu dönemde hem gazetecilik faaliyetlerinde hem de gazetecilerin çalışma koşullarında birtakım değişiklikler meydana gelmiştir. Çalışmanın amacı, Covid-19 pandemi sürecinde Türkiye’deki gazetecilerin çalışma pratiklerinde yaşanan değişim ve dönüşümleri saptamaktır. Bu doğrultuda amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden maksimum çeşitlilik örneklemesi kullanılarak, ulusal ve bölgesel düzeyde Türkiye’de medya alanının farklı kollarında çalışan kişilerle görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmayla, Covid-19 pandemisinde dijital teknolojilerin habercilik alanına önemli bir avantaj sağladığı tespit edilmiştir. Bununla birlikte Covid-19 pandemi döneminde yeni iletişim teknolojilerinin medya alanında daha fazla kullanılmasının, mesleki bir gereklilik olarak gazetecilere dijital teknolojileri kullanmayı daha işlevsel öğrenme zorunluluğu getirdiği görülmüştür. Ayrıca çalışma sonucunda, Covid-19 pandemisinin gazetecilerin kolektif çalışma biçimini olumsuz etkilediği ve bireyselliğin ön plana çıktığı belirlenmiştir.
