Abstract

Postoperative intraabdominal abscess, brid ileus, evisceration and wound site infections constitute major problems for surgeons. It is known that antibiotics administered parenterally and enterally can reduce these complications. However, no study concerning the changes in complications and mortality upon intraabdominal use of antibiotics was performed in recent years. 92 consecutive patients operated in our clinic due to fecal or purulent peritonitis were categorized into two groups and observed. Preoperative intraabdominal metronidazole and lavage was applied in addition to systemic antibiotics to 46 patients in the study group. Complications were observed only in 2 patients (4%) within this group. These consisted of wound site infection and evisceration. On the contrary, 46 patients in the control group were received only systemic antibiotics, upon which wound site infection in 8 of patients (17%) and evisceration in 1 case (2%) occurred (p
