Impact of Nd: YAG Laser Posterior Capsulotomy on Macular Thickness

Abstract
Background: The aim of the present prospective study was to assess changes in macular thickness by means of spectral optical coherence tomography after neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification.Methods: 69 eyes (37 right, 32 left) of 53 patients (18 male, 35 female) who underwent Nd: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy between May 2012 and June 2013 were included to this study. Pre-capsulotomy central macular thickness was compared with post-capsulotomy measurements at 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months.Results: Mean patient age was 66 (35-83) years. While mean central macular thickness was 209.8±28.2 ? prior to Nd: YAG laser capsulotomy, post-laser values at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months were 213.3±27.5 ?, 214±26.8 ?, 213±26.3 ?, and 212.9±26.5 ?, respectively. No statistically significant differences in mean central macular thickness measured pre- and post-capsulotomy were determined (p>0.05).Conclusion: Nd: YAG laser capsulotomy for the treatment of posterior capsular opacification is a safe and effective procedure that does not cause significant increase in macular thickness.

Amaç: Bu prospektif çalışmada, arka kapsül kesafeti gelişmiş olgularda Nd: YAG (Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) lazer arka kapsulotomi sonrası Spektral OKT (Optik Kohorens Tomografi) (OPKO/OTI, Miami, FL) ile makula kalınlık değişikliklerinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlandı.Gereç ve Yöntem: Mayıs 2012 ile Haziran 2013 arasında 53 hastanın (18 erkek, 35 kadın) 69 gözüne Nd: YAG lazer arka kapsülotomi uygulandı. Hastaların kapsülotomi öncesi merkezi makula kalınlıkları, kapsülotomi sonrası birinci hafta, birinci ay, üçüncü ay ve altıncı ay ölçümleri ile karşılaştırıldı.Bulgular: Ortalama yaş 66 (35-83) idi. Hastaların işlem öncesinde merkezi makula kalınlıkları ortalaması 209.8±28.2 ? iken, işlem sonrası birinci haftada, birinci ayda, üçüncü ayda ve altıncı ayda sırasıyla 213.3±27.5 ?, 214±26.8 ?, 213±26.3 ?, 212.9±26.5 ? olarak bulundu. Uygulama öncesi ve sonrası merkezi makula kalınlıkları karşılaştırıldığında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunmadı (p>0.05)Sonuç: Arka kapsül kesafeti tedavisinde Nd: YAG lazer kapsülotomi işlemi merkezi makula kalınlığında artış oluşturmayan etkin ve güvenli bir işlemdir.
