Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the text and visuals of the 4th grade Social Studies textbook in terms of gender roles. In this study, the case study model, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The research data were collected through the document analysis of the Primary School 4th Grade Social Studies Textbook, which was accepted as a textbook for five years starting from the 2018-2019 academic year with the decision of the Ministry of National Education Board of Education and Discipline No. 78 dated 28 May 2018. In addition, for reliability, interviews were conducted with 6 teachers, 3 women and 3 men, who taught the 4th Grade Social Studies textbook with easily accessible sampling method. The descriptive analysis method of gender roles in 234 images in the book and the texts associated with these images were analyzed. The descriptive analysis process was carried out within the framework of the stages specified by Dawson (2009). A framework was created from the research questions, the conceptual framework of the research, and the dimensions obtained from the literature review, and it was determined under which headings the data would be organized. The data were brought together in meaningful groups. The data arranged according to the created frame were digitized. Accordingly, gender roles are grouped under three headings: "out-of-home roles", "occupational roles", and "domestic roles". As a result, it was seen that the male figure was given more place than the female figure in the visuals in the 4th grade Social Studies textbook. It has been determined that women take part in domestic roles and men play out-of-home roles. In addition, it has been concluded that more occupations are attributed to men than women, women are made more active in domestic work than men, and many domestic work responsibilities are attributed to women. Similarly, it has been observed that there are stereotypes about gender roles between girls and boys.
