Abstract
Objective: To determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in patients with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) on cervical cytology Materials and Methods: From November 2001 to July 2002, from patients attending to Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics, 31 patients with the cytologic diagnosis of ASCUS and 50 patients within the normal cervical smears were identified. HPV DNA was studied in cervical scraps in both groups of patients with hybrid capture system I. Results: HPV detection rate in the cytologic diagnosis of ASCUS was 3.2% (1/31), whereas in the control group HPV frequency rate was 6% (3/50). The difference between two groups was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: In our study the low detection rates of HPV in women with the cytologic diagnosis of ASCUS suggests referral of these women to colposcopy or repeat cytology instead of doing HPV triage test.
