Severe dysplasia in a breast hamartoma: A premalign lesion?

lesions. In this report under the light of a breast hamartoma case, we aimed to discuss if breast hamartomas are as innocent lesions as they are considered to be. Although cancer development was not reported in our case, severe and disseminated dysplasia was determined in the hamartoma. As it is generally known, severe epithelial dysplasia is the final step just before the cancer development. This is consistent with the latest point of view reporting that cancer development may be seen in at least some types of hamartomas. In this manuscript, under the light of the reported case in which severe dysplasia was determined histopathologically, the malignant potential of breast hamartomas was discussed and the literature reviewed.

Özet

Meme hamartomları klinik ve histopatolojik açıdan nadir olgular olup prekanseröz olmayan lezyonlar olarak bilinir. Bu çalışmamızda meme hamartomu tespit edilen olgumuz ışığında meme hamartomlarının düşünüldüğü kadar masum patolojiler olup olmadığını irdelemeyi amaçladık. Bizim olgumuzda kanser gelişimi görülmemekle birlikte hamartom içinde yaygın ağır displastik değişiklikler saptanmıştır. Bilindiği gibi ağır epitelyal displazi kanser gelişiminden hemen önceki son basamaktır. Bu durum, son zamanlarda en azından bazı hamartom tiplerinin içinde kanser gelişebileceğini bildiren görüşlerle uyumludur. Bu makalede ağır displazi tespit edilen olgumuz ışığında meme hamartomlarının malign potansiyelleri tartışılmış ve literatür gözden geçirilmiştir.
