Abstract
Red mullet fishermen generally prefer to use gillnets with 36 mm mesh size and 35 meshesdepth. But in some regions, gillnets which have more meshes in depth are used to catch theother commercial species in different seasons. In this study, mesh size of 36 mm red mullet(Mullus sp.) gillnets which have 35 and 70 meshes in depth were used. The effects of gillnetheight in the water column on catch composition in İzmir Bay were investigated. The similarityratio of caught individuals between gillnets were calculated as %52.4 and the result ofmatched two pairs test was (p≤0.05 z=0.034) significant. Gillnets which have 70 meshes indepth caught target species and as well as bogue (Boops boops) and picarel (Spicara flexuosa)which have commercial value. As a result, 70 meshes depth gillnet catch composition, theywere more effective than gillnets with 35 meshes in depth.
