Perinatal Nursing and Its Standards

Abstract

A perinatal nurse is a health professional who provides holistic care during perinatal periodwhen the maternal/infant mortality rates at their highest and women’s health and qualityof life are adversely affected. Throughout fertility processes, it is important to fulfil the careneeds of women, fetus/newborn, and the family during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatalperiods starting from preconceptional stage. Perinatal nurses have critical roles and responsi bilities to meet these requirements within the framework of qualified, sufficient, effective, ev idence-based and professional nursing care. In some countries, duties and responsibilities ofperinatal nursing and qualifications they should have, are defined by the relevant institutions.All these are being published in the guidelines as standards. Whereas, in our country, there isno definition of duties, power, and responsibilities of perinatal nursing.This review has been written in order to define perinatal nursing which is one of the sub-spe cialities of Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing; to set forth the significance, standards andqualifications of the practice through relevant examples from U.S. and Canada, and to contrib ute to the literature in this context.

Perinatoloji hemşiresi, anne/bebek ölüm oranlarının en yüksek olduğu, kadın sağlığı ve yaşamkalitesinin olumsuz etkilendiği perinatal dönemde bütüncül bakım sağlayan bir sağlık uzma nıdır. Kadın, fetüs, yenidoğan ve ailenin prekonsepsiyonel dönemden başlayarak doğurganlıksüreçleri boyunca gebelik, doğum ve doğum sonrası dönemlere ilişkin bakım gereksinimlerininkarşılanması önemlidir. Bu gereksinimlerin nitelikli, kaliteli, etkin, kanıt temelli ve profesyonelhemşirelik bakımı çerçevesinde karşılanabilmesi için perinatoloji hemşirelerine önemli rol vesorumluluklar düşmektedir. Bazı ülkelerde perinatoloji hemşireliğine ilişkin rol ve sorumluluk lar ile sahip olması gereken yeterlilikler, ilgili kurumlar tarafından tanımlanmış ve tüm bunlarstandartlar halinde rehberlerde yayımlanmıştır. Ülkemizde ise perinatoloji hemşireliğine dairherhangi bir görev, yetki ve sorumluluk tanımlaması yoktur. Bu derleme, Doğum ve Kadın Has talıkları Hemşireliğinin özel alt alanı olan perinatoloji hemşireliğini tanımlamak, perinatolojihemşireliğinin önemi, standartları ve yeterliliklerini Amerika ve Kanada örnekleri ile ortaya koy mak ve bu bağlamda literatüre katkı sağlamak amacıyla kaleme alınmıştır.
