Determination of Communication Skills of Nursing Education Instructors

Abstract

Background: This research was conducted in order to determine the communication skillsof the instructors who teach nursing education by evaluating the instructors and students. Methods: The research was conducted with 35 lecturers and 326 students studying at theSchool of Health Nursing Department of a state university in the Central Anatolia Region inthe fall semester of the 2016-2017 academic year. The data were collected with the surveyform and the Teacher Communication Skills Scale (TCSC). Data were evaluated by frequency,percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent two-sample t-test and ANOVA.Results: It was determined that instructors almost always showed communication behaviorsin sub-dimensions, whereas students indicated that instructors showed these behaviors mostof the time. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of empa thy, transparency, equality, effectiveness, adequacy and total scores when the mean scores ofTCSCs of the instructors and students were compared (P < .001). Conclusion: According to the results of the research, it was found that there has been a dif ference about communication skills between teaching staff and students and the teachingstaffs’ opinions about their communication skills were more adequate than the opinions ofthe students.

Amaç: Araştırma, hemşirelik eğitimi veren öğretim elemanlarının iletişim becerilerini öğretimelemanı ve öğrenci görüşleriyle değerlendirmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Araştırma İç Anadolu Bölgesinde bir devlet üniversitesinin Sağlık Yüksekokulu Hem şirelik Bölümü’nde 2016-2017 öğretim yılı güz döneminde ders veren 35 öğretim elemanı veöğrenim gören 326 öğrenciyle yapılmıştır. Veriler anket formu ve Öğretmen İletişim BecerileriÖlçeği (ÖİBÖ) ile toplanmıştır. Veriler sayı, yüzde, ortalama, standart sapma, bağımsız iki örnekt testi ve tek yönlü ANOVA ile değerlendirilmiştir.Bulgular: Öğretim elemanlarının tüm ÖİBÖ alt boyutlarında iletişim ile ilgili davranışları geneldeher zaman gösterdikleri, öğrencilerin ise öğretim elemanlarının bu davranışları çoğu zamangösterdikleri görüşündedir. Öğretim elemanları ve öğrencilerin ÖİBÖ puan ortalamaları karşı laştırıldığında empati, saydamlık, eşitlik, etkililik, yeterlilik boyutları ve toplam puan ortalamala rının arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark olduğu belirlenmiştir (P < .001). Sonuç: Araştırma sonuçlarına göre, öğretim elemanlarının iletişim becerilerine yönelik öğre tim elemanı ve öğrenci görüşleri arasında fark olduğu ve öğretim elemanlarının kendi iletişimbecerilerine yönelik görüşlerinin öğrencilerin görüşlerine göre daha yeterli düzeyde olduğubulunmuştur.
