The role of postpartum family planning counseling in the use of modern contraceptive methods

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: In this study we aimed to determine contraceptive methods which were prefered after family planning counseling and effect of family planning counseling in the choice of modern contraceptive methods.STUDY DESIGN: Family planning counseling was given to 1000 women who delivered vaginally between April-June 2002 in our clinic. The women were asked for numbers of children, region, educational status ,previous contraceptive methods, desiring pregnancy at future. Chi-square test was used for statistical analyzes.RESULT(s): In all regions, traditional method was the most prefered method before family planning counseling. Choice of the modern contraceptive methods increased significantly after family planning counseling. In addition, in all regions, a rise in usage of any contraceptive methods (traditional and modern) was noted.CONCLUSION(s): The use of modern contraceptive methods increases after family planning counseling in postpartum period.

AMAÇ: Bu araştırmada normal doğum yapan 1000 kadın ile görüşülerek aile planlaması danışmanlığı öncesi ve sonrasında seçtikleri korunma yöntemleri ve modern yöntem seçiminde danışmanlığın etkisinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.MATERYAL ve METOD: Nisan-Temmuz 2002 tarihleri arasında kliniğimizde normal doğum yapan 1000 kadına danışmanlık hizmeti verildi. Olguların sahip olduğu çocuk sayısı, geldiği bölge, eğitim durumu, tekrar çocuk isteme, danışmanlık öncesi ve sonrası tercih ettikleri yöntemler sorgulandı. Veriler istatistiksel olarak x2 önemlilik testi ile değerlendirilmiştir.BULGULAR: Tüm bölgelerde danışmanlık öncesi en fazla tercih edilen korunma yöntemi geleneksel yöntemdi. Danışmanlık sonrası modern yöntemlerle korunma oranlarında belirgin artış saptandı. Ayrıca bütün bölgelerde herhangi bir yöntemle (geleneksel+modern yöntemler) korunmada da artma kaydedildi.SONUÇ: Doğum sonrası etkin aile planlaması hizmetleri ile modern kontraseptif yöntem seçim oranı artmaktadır.
