Factors influencing the ISO 14000 Environmental Management System implementation

Abstract

ISO 14000 Environmental Management Systems (EMS) guides all types affirms for planning production process in the direction of waste reduction. The main objective of this study is to determine the importance degrees of the factors influencing the ISO 14000 EMS implementation in the Turkish firms and the differences of these factors according to firm characteristics. For this purpose, the survey was conducted on 66 firms, which implement ISO 14000 EMS or firms that prepare to implement ISO 14000 EMS in one-year time. The factors influencing the implementation of ISO 14000 EMS were classified in four groups such as aiming to obtain improvements in financial indicators, expectations of improvements and attitudes in processes related to environment, competition, and certain issues related to stakeholders. Expectations of improvements and attitudes in processes related to environment and the issues related to stakeholders have been determined as the most important factors influencing the ISO 14000 EMS implementation. In addition to this, some differences have been determined in the factors influencing the ISO 14000 EMS implementation with respect to sector, firm age, sales revenue, foreign capital, being export oriented, practice of duration for ISO 9000 Quality Management System (QMS), starting date of ISO 14000 EMS, having received environmental award, and implementation status of TQM.

Özet

Araştırmanın amacı, Türkiye'de ISO 14000 Çevre Yönetim Sistemleri'nin (ÇYS) uygulanmasında etken olan faktörlerin önemini ve bu faktörlerdeki farklılıkları çeşitli firma özellikleri açısından ortaya koymaktır. Bu amaçla Türkiye'de ISO 14000 ÇYS uygulayan ve bu sisteme geçmek üzere hazırlık yapan 66 firma ile anket çalışması yapılmıştır. Çevre ile ilgili firma içi süreçlerdeki tutuma ve paydaşlara yönelik konuların ISO 14000 ÇYS'e geçişte etken olan önemli konular olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu faktörlerde; sektör, kuruluş yılı, satış hasılatı, yabancı ortaklık, ihracat, ISO 9000 Kalite Yönetim Sistemi (KYS) uygulama süresi, ISO 14000 ÇYS 'e geçiş tarihi, çevre ödülü, ve TKY uygulama gibi firma özelliklerine göre farklılıklar onaya konmuştur.
