Abstract

A new inverted pendulum with a copper-beryllium(Cu-Be) flexure element is designed and its perform ance is determined by detecting the respective angu lar changes of the pendulum using a ccd camerawithin an oscillation period range of 2 s and 30 s. Anew arrangement was made by clamping of the flex ure element and pendulum rod to avoid subjectingthem to compression stress due to the weight of theoverall pendulum mass on the flexure. This new formof inverted pendulum employs a flexure speciallyclamped to the pendulum rod to provide tension de formation under the weight of mass and could beused for dynamic testing of highly sensitive flexureelements. The quality factors of the pendulum weredetermined with respect to flexure elements bymeasuring free oscillations decaying exponentially. The results showed that the new inverted pendulumwith a different connection between the flexure ele ment and pendulum rod can be used to measure theanelasticity of materials and to test elements underbending deformation in a dynamic way. Many experimental apparatuses have been designedand used to investigate the anelastic behavior of ma terials. These are divided into three main types, interms of the frequency of use: subresonance, reso nance and supraresonance methods. The resonancemethod is particularly useful for the dynamic testingof the flexure in a pendulum. There are many typesof pendulum apparatus and various clamping orien tations are used for the measurement of anelasticity. The most frequently used type of pendulum to deter mine anelastic phenomena in materials is the torsionpendulum consisting basically of a mass as an iner tia member suspended from a wire specimen that issubjected to a twisting deformation. The standardpendulum is used with various modifications. Thesimple pendulum is known as the basic arrangementof the standard pendulum, the specimen is undertension stress and subjected to bending stress butlow frequencies cannot be easily generated becausefrequencies depend on the length of pendulum rod.The frequency changes in inverse proportion to thesquare root of the rod length so that periods of morethan a few seconds require a very long pendulumrod, which is not useful for experimental purposes. An inverted pendulum is another version of the stan dard pendulum known as the “swinging type”. Itconsists of a rod on the top of which a suspensionmass placed. The rod is supported by a spring at tached to its bottom in order to hold the pendulumrod vertically. The spring comes under compressionstress and is subjected to a twisting deformation dueto the suspended mass. The oscillation of the pendu lum rod depends mainly on torque acting on thespring element and can easily vary over a wideband. Some researchers have used various types of com bined and torsional pendulum apparatuses to deter mine the anelasticity of copper-beryllium flexures, for the purpose of designing a highly sensitive masscomparator. Different types of flexures were used aspivot elements. Some measurements were carriedout by using an inverted pendulum with an instantsteel flexure element which was under compressionand subjected to bending deformation, and it hasbeen shown that the inverted pendulum was a valu able tool for the study of internal friction, that itcould be used to probe anelasticity within a wideband of frequencies, and that it allowed direct testsof the features of anelastic behavior that were hardto perform in other ways. An inverted pendulum is a valuable instrument forprecision measurement, gravitational physics, andalso for measuring the anelasticity of materials, which is one of the mechanical properties connectedto designing highly accurate measurement devicesand sensors used in the mass, force, pressure anddimensional fields of metrology. The frequency of aninverted pendulum can easily be changed over awide band by either adding mass on top of the pen dulum or by changing the centre of gravity of thesuspended mass. This enables dynamic testing ofmetals, especially anelasticity in the flexure elementsof the pendulum. This study covers the attempts of searching the rela tionships between microstructural material proper ties of flexure elements and their respective anelasticbehavior by using an inverted pendulum.
