Abstract
Advanced laminated composites are used in severalengineering fields such as space station structures, aircraft, automobiles and submarines. Because oftheir favorable weight-to-load ratio, plates arewidely used by the aerospace industry. With the ad vent of the new composite material structures andtheir increased use in the aerospace industry, thereis a need to reconsider the problem of the nonlineardynamic behavior of laminated composite plates ex posed to time-dependent pulses, such as sonic boomand blast loadings. This study deals with the derivation and the solutionof nonlinear dynamic equations of a composite can tilever plate exposed to blast load. As it was clearlyestablished, these pressure pulses reach the peakvalue in such a short time that the structure can beassumed to be loaded instantly and uniformly in thespanwise direction. The overpressure associatedwith the blast pulses can be described in terms of themodified Friedlander exponential decay equation.Friedlander decay function is used to approximatethe air blast loading. Dynamic equations of the mo tion are derived by the use of the virtual work prin ciple. Transverse shear stresses are ignored. The geometric nonlinearity effects are taken into accountwith the von Kármán large deflection theory of thinplates. An approximate solution is assumed for thespace domain. The Galerkin Method is used to ob tain the nonlinear differential equations in the timedomain. In this study the displacement functions arechosen by considering the results of static large de formation analysis of laminated composite by usinga commercial finite element code ANSYS 10.0 soft ware. The plate is discretized using by the eight node laminated shell elements (SHELL 91) witheight nodes which have geometric nonlinear capa bility. The finite difference method is applied tosolve the system of coupled nonlinear equations.Comparisons of the transverse displacement-timeand strain-time histories on the specific points of theplate are obtained. A methodology for simulatingplate response subjected to blast load has beendemonstrated. The results obtained from the finiteelement code (ANSYS) and the numerical solutionused for these blast studies were compared here. Free vibration analyses are performed by using theANSYS 10.0 software. Time step convergence studieswere conducted on plates subjected to 1 kPa blastload. The convergence studies are the goal of aclose proximity numerical solution. It was found thattime increment of no more than 1.0 miliseconds wereadequate for such a numerical solution. AFORTRAN program was described for automatingthe application of blast loads to a cantilever plate. All of these aspects were key preliminaries to theparametric studies conducted on blast loaded canti lever plates. Time-histories of normal strain in the xdirection for the different points on the plate areperformed and compared by using the ANSYS 10.0software. The discrepancy would be a result of theeffect of higher vibration modes on the plate re sponse. Parametric studies are also applied for thecantilever plate. A comparison of different fiber ori entations indicates that the plates had closely dis placement and strain results for the chosen orienta tions. However, the 45/-45 oriented plate had themaximum displacement. Also, the effect of the thick ness is examined. As a result, while the thickness ofthe plate increases, the amplitude of the transversedeflection in the z direction decreases, and the cor responding frequency increases. For the cantileverplate, the maximum normal strain occurs at clampededge, but the maximum displacement occurs at thefree-end of plate. So the analyses are performed forthese specific points. In this study the in-plane stiff ness is taken into account as a difference of theanalysis made before. But the strain comparison re sults demonstrated that the nonlinear effects arenegligible for the cantilever plate subjected to theseloads. The analysis results show that the nonlinear ity related to the first derivative of the deflection iseffective on the strain variation. The maximum de flection is ten times of the plate thickness approxi mately. In this study, only one term is taken for each dis placement function. Therefore, the contributions ofthe higher modes to the structural response are notincluded. A study can be performed for differentboundary conditions and materials. The effect of theblast pressure character on the dynamic behaviorcan be investigated. Future studies may be devotedon these subjects.
