Abstract

After 1980's there is an important shift away from production that is dependent upon material resources of production that utilizes knowledge as the key source of competitiveness and innovation. Increasingly, the production of commodities involves combinations of manufacturing and service functions. Such combinations can be achieved within a company or by an organized mix of internal and external expertise. This paper assesses the processes of internalization and/or externalization of high-order service functions that are driven by the organizational structures. This paper will present this evidence in the largest industrial firms exploring the issues from the size, age, sector, technology use, market area and number of blue and white collar labor, organizational structure of firm perfective and geographical dimensions. The data presented in this paper are based on a survey of 53 largest industrial firms interviewed in 2001 in Istanbul Region. The chi-square tests have demonstrated that only organization structure influences the internalization and/or externalization of high-order services. Within this framework the spatial patterns of goods and services production in large industries differ in the region. The dominant locational factor of production units is to minimize locational costs but of service units especially headquarters of industrial firms is to maximize contacts. Therefore, industrial firms prefer to locate their headquarters at business areas.
