Cultural profile in Turkish construction industry related to the work-goals

Abstract

Global competition in the construction industry has accelerated the studies on culture and cross-cultural diversities. Recently, most of the developing countries and the Europe were targeted to develop a cultural profiling model for the construction industry in order to gain competitive advantage both domestic and international levels, and to identify potential areas of conflict and harmony between construction participants. However, the Turkish construction industry is in the lack of cultural studies. This PhD dissertation research aims to clarify the cultural diversity in construction industry. Research, concerns to establish cultural profiles of selected groups of professional actors within the Turkish construction sector. The sample was targeted at the professional disciplines of civil engineering and architecture. The findings of the research provide a cultural profiling model for the Turkish construction sector and a cross-cultural comparison both in domestic and international levels. According to results of cultural dimensions, all these results have an importance to receive great success either in domestic or in international construction projects. In order to gam competitive advantage it is becoming evident that the Turkish construction industry is in need of understanding cultural differences both in domestic and the international construction projects, hurther researches should be undertaken on the cultural diversities in construction industry to provide o fuller picture of industry culture and to provide a competitive edge in global arena with successful projects.

Özet

İnşaat endüstrisindeki küresel rekabet kültür ve kültürel farklılıklar konusunda yapılan çalışmaları ivmelendirmiştir. Günümüzde, gelişmekte olan bir çok ülke ve Avrupa, kendi içinde ve uluslararası alanda rekabet avantajı elde edebilmek ve inşaat endüstrisindeki potansiyel anlaşmazlık ve uyum alanlarını belirleyebilmek amacıyla, bir kültürel profil modeli geliştirmeye odaklanmışlardır. Ancak, Türk inşaat endüstrisi bu tür çalışmalardan yoksundur. Türk inşaat endüstrisinden seçilmiş meslek gruplarının kültürel profilini oluşturmaya yönelik olan bu araştırma, inşaat endüstrisindeki kültürel farklılıklara açıklık kazandırmayı amaçlamakladır. Örnekletti, inşaat mühendisliği ve mimarlık disiplinlerine odaklanmıştır. Araştırmanın bulguları Türk inşaat sektörünün kültürel profili hakkında bir model oluşturarak, ülke içinde ve uluslar arası düzeyde bir karşılaştırma yapmayı da sağlamaktadır.
