The analysis of usage of the open spaces in the historical city center of Amasya

Abstract

Amasya is one of the important historic cities of Anatolia. Amasya, the existence of which has been strongly felt in Anatolia since the periods before Christ, was sometimes chosen as the capital city, sometimes served as a powerful metropolitan and a province for the princes. Its last and the most important mission was the fact that it was the city where Amasya Circular which ignited the independence war was declared. The objective of this study is to research how the open spaces in Amasya historic city center are changed from the past until today, how much they are affected by this change and how they are used today and to realize the assessments that will help in providing the balance between the needs and expectations of the urban people of the 21st century and the sensitivity that needs to be shown to the historic cities. In this concept, Yesilirmak Bank Promenade, Yavuz Selim City Square, Bayezid Complex Courtyard and Hatuniye Neighbourhood have been selected in order to determine the perception of the urban people of the change in the open spaces, their expectations for the common areas and the way they use these areas. The urban open spaces selected in four different function areas of Amasya city centre have been analysed in three different method: surveys, observations and space syntax. In this article, the mathematical data which have been obtained through computerised space syntax method compared with the perceptual and behavioural data obtained through observations.

Özet

Amasya Anadolu’nun en önemli tarihi kentlerinden birisidir. Bu çalışmanın amacı Amasya tarihi kent merkezindeki açık mekanların geçmişten bugüne ulaşırken nasıl bir değişim geçirdiği, bu değişimden ne kadar etkilendiği ve bugün nasıl kullanıldığının araştırılması ve bu araştırma sonucunda, 21. yüzyıl kentlisinin değişen ihtiyaç ve beklentileri ile tarihi kentlere gösterilmesi gereken hassasiyet arasındaki dengenin sağlanmasına yardımcı olacak değerlendirmelerin gerçekleştirilmesidir. Bu bağlamda, Amasya kent merkezinde dört farklı fonksiyon alanında seçilen kentsel açık mekanlar belirlenen amaç doğrultusunda anket, gözlem ve mekansal dizin olmak üzere üç farklı yöntemle analiz edilmiştir. Bu makalede, gözlem ve mekansal dizin yoluyla elde edilen verilerin sonuçları karşılaştırılmaktadır.
