What Ibn Khaldun saw: The judiciary of Mamluk Egypt

Abstract

Ibn Khaldun had served six times as the chief judge in the Maml uk Periodbetween the years 1384 -1406. Once appointed chief judge he saw the corru ption of the Mamluk Legal Administration and attempted a number of improv ement to rehabilitate the poor condition. His attempts disturbed the existingstructure and Ibn Khal dun faced various obstacles. This article has examinedthe period of Ibn Haldun s chief judge, the features of this period and Ibn Kha ldun s assessments takes place on the subject based primarily on his autobiog- raphic book (et-Tarif).

İbn Haldun Memlük Döneminde 1384 -1406 yılları arasında çeşitli kereleratanmak suretiy le altı defa başkadılık görevini ihdas etmiştir. İbn Haldun başk adı olarak atanınca Memlük adlî teşkilatının büyük bir yozlaşmayla yüz yüze old uğunu görmüş ve bu kötü durumu ıslah etmek için bir takım teşebbüslerde b ulunmuştur. Onun mevcut yapıyı ıslah yön ündeki bu çabaları yerleşik düzeni rahatsız etmiş ve İbn Haldun çeşitli engellemelerle karşılaşmıştır. Elinizdeki bumakale İbn Haldun un otobiyografik eseri et-Tarif ten yola çıkarak, İbn Haldun unbaşkadılık yaptığı dönemi, bu dönemin özelliklerini ve İb n Haldun un konuyla ilgili değerlendirmelerini ele almaktadır.Anahtar kelimeler:
