Abstract

Painting decoration which is one of the fine arts, is used fondly in interior decora-tions of our architectural structures. In the past, whether in civil or ecclesiastical architecture, painting decorations seen in almost every architectural structure, adorned the areas such as domes, ceilings and wall surfaces of interiors. Painting decorations are named according to the surface materials on which they are applied. These are known as on-stucco, on-wood, on-leather and on-cloth, on-stone and on-marble painting decorations. The examples of these techniques we mentioned, alongside the buildings of civil architecture, can be widely seen par-ticularly in mosques, which are the main structures of our ecclesiastical architecture. Today, thanks to changing circumstances and evolving building technologies, examples in different sizes in our classic mosque architecture have begun to emer-ge. Physical changes in the structure volumes, has referred the artists to a quest for change in interior decorations. By using the opportunities brought by the era and the technology in the field of decoration, formations of a number of novelties in painting decoration art have been observed. Today, the place of on-stucco techniques used in our classic mosque architectu-re has been taken by painting decoration art works made with different materials and techniques. One of these techniques is the “engraving technique" applied on Ahmet Hamdi Akseki Mosque in Ankara. In the method used in the preparation of this proceeding, initially the publicati-ons on painting decoration and information on the related structure have been scanned. More importantly, interviews were made with the designer of the decora-tion, muralist Semih İrteş, designer of the writings, calligrapher Hüseyin Kutlu and the implementing craftsmen. Finally, proceeding was written by taking the photog-raphs of the decoration during its implementation and after its completion.
