Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of some nongenetic factors like protein in the ration and growth promoter rates for Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica); on the growth rate and the feed convertion rate, and to evaluate the economic perspective of this growth period. This research was performed on the Japanese quails that were bred at the University of Istanbul Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Department of Animal Breeding and Husbandry Quail Research Unit. The research subjects were fed ad libitum with two separate rations that contained 22% raw protein and 3100 Kcal/kg metabolic energy, and 15% raw protein with 2750 Kcal/kg metabolic energy, throughout the study period. In this study, different ratios of Zn-bacitracin were used as a growth promoter. The research was conducted on a total of 440 quails, organised into 44 quails in each subgroup. The effects of the protein level and growth promoter rates on the quails' growth levels are evaluated as data presented in the tables of multiple classification, with an analysis that was performed using the GLM Procedure from the SAS Program package. The live weights of the quails at birth and in the growth period until the sixth week were found to be at varying levels of 7.50-7.76 g, 18.32-30.27 g, 34.22-61.49 g, 55.21-92.98 g, 81.47-149.24 g, 120.95-186.89 g and 157.10-223.69 g. No important differences were found in the birth weights among all groups and subgroups. For the live weights from the first week until the end of the sixth week of the growth period, the quails which were fed rations containing high (22%) levels of raw protein, and within the protein groups the quails which were in the subgroups that had a high Zn-bacitracin ratio, were found to have statistically significant superiority. The addition of Zn-bacitracin to the ration was found to be more efficient for the quails that were fed with rations containing high (22%) levels of raw protein. The live weights of the female quails in the same groups was determined to be more than the males. In the study, the ability of the investigated factors to determine the live weights was found to rise until the fourth week and then decrease at the fifth and sixth weeks.c At all weeks, although the quails that were fed with rations containing high (22%) levels of raw protein consumed more food than the quails which were fed with rations containing low (15%) levels of raw protein, more benefit from the food was derived and more live weight gain was determined. According to the Zn-bacitracin ratios that were found in each protein level of the used ration, at all weeks throughout the research period, live weight gains of the quails and their profit ratios from the food were found to be in a rise parallel to, and in accordance with, the Zn-bacitracin ratio. In the study, in order to evaluate the quail growths according to the economic perspective at the eighth week, the weights of the quails that were fed with low (15%) level protein rations were also evaluated and it was found that with respect to the live weight, by using rations containing high levels of protein, the growth period would be shorter and would be more economic with respect to time. Furthermore, more food was ultimately consumed by the low protein level groups, because of the additional two weeks' growth period needed for their live weights to reach the weight of the 22% raw protein fed quails, so it wouldn't be economic as the expected live weight wasn't gained and benefits from the raw food was insufficient. It was found that the addition of high levels of Zn-bacitracin to the ration increases the performance of the food containing high levels of protein, and this leads to economic profit. When the research is evaluated thoroughly according to the data that was collected, it is determined that profit performance can be increased by using rations with added high levels of protein and growth promoters, and more economic breeding can be done than with low protein rations. In spite of all this, the food which is produced from animals that are bred using growth promoters may have a questionable affect on human health.
