System and/or Criticism: Mehmet Izzet s Sociological Understanding

Abstract

In this paper, Mehmet Izzet s profile as a sociologist, which support andcriticize Gokalpian system, is described by his intellectual biography, by significantthemes he investigated, and by his works. For this aim, firstly, we analyze dialecticalrelationship between dogmatism and criticism or as Mustafa Sekip called it, dialecticof part-idea and whole-idea in his research field. Secondly, Mehmet Izzet s evaluationof relation between hero and society, and his thoughts about ethos of the nation arediscussed. Finally, how a society Mehmet Izzet depicts in Yeni ictimaiyat dersleri (Le- ctures of new sociology) is identified by comparing Sadak s Sociology . Hence we tryto supply answers for the questions: Why the sociologist has been forgotten? Why hisoriginal standing has been faded?

Özet

Bu çalışmada Mehmet İzzetin Gökalpçi sistemin hem destekçisi olan hem debu sisteme eleştirel yaklaşan bir sosyolog olarak portresini; düşünürün entelektüelarka planını, ele aldığı önemli sorular ve eserleri üzerinden tasvir etmeye çalışacağız.Bu maksatla öncelikle İzzetin düşüncesini biçimlendiren dogmatizm ve eleştirellikveya Mustafa Şekip Tunçun ifadesiyle parça fikir-bütün fikir diyalektiğini araştıra- cağız. Daha sonra döneminin tartışmalarında İzzeti öne çıkaran büyük adam ve cemi- yet ilişkisine yönelik yaklaşımını ve millet ethosu hakkındaki soruşturmasını irdeleye- ceğiz. Daha sonra İzzetin Yeni içtimaiyat derslerinde resmettiği toplum tasavvurunuele alacağız. Böylece sosyologumuzun sosyoloji tarihinin yazımında niçin unutulduğuveya özgün duruşunun soluklaştığını cevaplamaya çalışacağız.
