THE CONCEPTUAL AND HISTORICAL FRAMEWORK OF THE DEBATE ON HETERODOXY IN TURKEY

Abstract

From past to present, there has been a great deal of controversy over Alevism as a heterodox belief system and the Alevi identity. How has the relation between heterodoxy and orthodoxy evolved in its historical and political context? How can we describe the contents of Alevism and its position vis-à-vis the official religious structure? How has the perception of Alevism differed from the Otto- man Empire to the Turkish Republic? However difficult it may be to answer these questions briefly and easily, this paper looks at the possible answers. The primary aim of this study is to explore the perception of Alevis by the state and orthodox Sunni Islam from the Ottoman era to the present. The various attempts to define and discuss Alevism over this long period of time no doubt give us significant clues on the issue. The present essay aims to interpret these attempts, situating them in their historical context, and examine the background of the discourses to be found in discussions about the Alevi identity.

Özet Heterodoks bir inanç topluluğu olarak Alevilik ve Alevi kimliği üzerine geçmişten günümüze bir- çok tartışmanın devam etmekte olduğunu görüyoruz. Siyasi ve tarihsel bağlamı içerisinde hete- rodoksluk ve ortodoksluk arasındaki ilişki nasıl gelişmiştir? Aleviliğin muhtevasını ve onun res- mi dini yapıyla ilişkisini nasıl tanımlayabiliriz? Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ile Türkiye Cumhuriyeti döneminde Aleviliğin konumuna dair nasıl bir algı mevcuttu? Bu sorulara kısa ve basit cevaplar verebilmek mümkün olmasa da makalenin içerisinde bu soruların yanıtları aranmaktadır. Bu ma- kale temelde Alevilerin, Osmanlı İmparatorluğundan günümüze uzanan süreçte devlet katında ve ortodoks Sünni bakış açısından nasıl algılandığını anlamaya çalışıyor. Bu uzun süreç içinde Alevi- liğe ilişkin yapılan tanımlama ve tartışma girişimleri kuşkusuz bu konuda önemli ipuçları sunuyor. Amacımız hem tarihsel bağlamına oturtarak bu girişimleri yorumlamak hem de Alevi kimliğine ilişkin yürütülen tartışmalardaki söylemlerin arka planını irdelemektir.
