Abstract
The Gulf of îzmit is an area located at the Eastern continuation of the Sea of Marmara, morp-hologicalli at its young stage, 50 km long, narrow and composed of three pits. Having a few deltas, coastal plains, plateaus and medium height mountains, Gulf of İzmit is under the effect of the fault which is the northern strand of the North Anatolian Fault Zone which has splitted in three sections starting from Akyazı towards the West. Around the Gulf, there are generally marinal terraces showing the old shore lines and locally seen fluviatile and lacustrine terraces. These terraces are observed as the upper plane over a deposit with horizontal or nearly horizontal dip or as an erosion surface. Transgressive and regressive sediments in the vertical direction, are sometimes laterally with gra- ded transition and interfingered. The ones with abundant fossils contain Ostrea Bank. The lower terraces are young whereas the higher ones are old in age. The terraces are divided into five groups as Very Low (0-6m), Low (7-30 m), Middle (40-60 m), High (80-90m) and Very High (180-190m). The Very Low terraces belong to Holocene whereas the rest belong to Pleisto¬cene Age. As a result of being covered locally due to the wave erosion of the sea at the coast, erosion effect be-hjnd the sea shore and fan deposits, slope wastes and alluviums, the outcrop areas have gotten smaller and gradu¬ally lost. It is difficult and almost impossible to determine the age of the terraces by means of the scarce flora and the fauna which consists of the plecypoda, especially Ostrea edulis, Tapes calverti, Cardium (Cerastoderma) edule, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Loripes lacteus. Geochronological age have been determined as High terraces 260.000, Middle terraces 130.000 and Low terraces 40000 years old. The first one corresponds to Middle Pleistocene (Paleotirrhenian) and others belong to the Late Pleistocene (Tyrrhenian and Neotyrrhenian) period. Regressions between transgressions belong to Mindel (Rome), Riss and Wurm glacial periods. Very High Terra¬ces as 520.000-550.000 years corresponds to the Lower Pleistocene. Three periods regarding these Pleistocence-deposits which have angular unconformity except the Lower Pleistocene, show that the Mediterranean waters has invaded the Gulf. Two fault groups formed by compressions in NW-SE directions as Strike Slip and Normal Faults have been effective in the evolution and development of Gulf of izmit. The ENE- WSW trending strike slip faults are dextral and NW-SE trending ones are sinistral. The normal faults have NNW - SSE trend. The high angle secondary faults which have dominant vertical slip belong to the strike slip faults and have a trend almost subparallel to them. From East to West, 5 blocks in rhomboidal and wedge shape, have been determined between these faults. Middle and Upper Pleistocene layers have a 4°-5°, rarely 10° dip towards the Gulf. There is reverse dipping at some places where faults of North Anatolian Fault Zone cross. Generally no folding structure is observed. In the last stage of Late Pleistocene, there are some evidences proving the unification of the Marmara and Black Sea with Gulf of İzmit and Lake Sapanca through Adapazarı Plain. There is a great possibility that with the invasion of the sea, the Adapazarı region, presently in the form of a plain, first became Gulf of Adapazarı and then the Adapazarı Strait as the Bosphorous.
