Abstract
The Gulf of Corinth separating the Peloponnesse from continental Greece is one of the most seismically active region in Aegean during the historical and instrumental periods. The aim of the study is to investigate present day active tectonics of the region where dextral North Anatolian Fault Zone extends to the extensional system in Aegean. The P-and T- axes obtained from the focal mechanisms of 41 events Mw > 4.5 occurred in the region between 37.7°-38.6° N latitudes and 21.5°-23.5° E longitudes during 1894-2004 are used to estimate the stress tensor acting in the region. Thus, the characteristics of the faulting in the region are investigated. In addition, microseismic activity data recorded in the western and eastern part of the gulf was analyzed to investigate whether any changes in the characteristics of faulting (stress tensor) of the region occurs. For the eastern part of the gulf, the focal mechanisms of 93 events 0.2 > ML > 3.6 occurred between 08-28.03.1981 and 18.07-23.08.1993 given by Hatzfeld et al. (2000), for western part of the gulf, data is obtained from Rigo et al. (1996) which are in total 146 events within magnitude range 2.2 > ML > 3.12 occurred between 01-27.08.1991 are utilized. The stress tensor analysis was carried out using the method of Gephart (1990). The results we obtained are: 1-) The orientation of the principal stress axes' azimuths and plunges for the Gulf of Corinth are 0^(272/72), o2=(98/18), o3=(7/2), 2-) The orientation of the principal stress axes for the eastern part of the Gulf are O!=(190/80), a2=(50/8), c3=(319/6), 3-) The orientation of the principal stress axes for the western part of the Gulf are CT!=(190/80), CT2=(292/2), O3=(23/10). The results suggest that the extension direction along the Gulf of Corinth is N-S, and the microseismic activities point out NW-SE extension in the eastern part of the Gulf, NE-SW extension in the western part of the Gulf. These results are in the good agreement with the GPS results.
