Abstract
This paper aims at evaluating top level managers in the Turkish private sector industiy in terms of two motivational theories, Maslow's 'Hierarchy of Needs' and McGregor's "X" and "Y," and comparing current findings with similar empirical findings obtained earlier in 1966 and 1978. This analysis sheds light to the trends in managerial motivation over the last forty years. A further comparative analysis of responsibility, authority and delegation levels among managers gives clues on how managerial motivation may be improved in the future. Hopefully, the empirical findings of this paper will provide a new basis of comparison for future longitudinal research.
