Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the prevalance of binge-eating disorder (BED) and relationships between BED and various anthropometric and metabolic parameters in 228 obese (body mass index > 27 kg/m2) women referred to our outpatient obesity clinic. BED was assessed by the Bulimic Investigatory Test, Edinburgh (BITE) proposed by Henderson and Freeman. Fifty three subjects (23 %) met the criteria for BED. No significant differences were observed between various parameters and the rate of weight loss in subjects with and without BED (232±311 g/week and 289±389 g/week, respectively, p>0.05). It is concluded that BED is common in obese women as assessed by the BITE. However, the presence of BED does not seem to have any effect on the success of weight reduction.
