Abstract
The possible etiologic relation of chronic poliovirus infection to motor neuron disease (MND) has received persistent attention. Poliovirus is considered as a possible agent, chiefly because of identical target cells inparalytic poliomyelitis and MND, and because there appears to be a higher incidence of MND in individuls with previous poliovirus infection. In order to explore further the histopathological aspects of MND, we compared the ventral horn lesions of MND with the ones seen in BALB/c mice which are inoculated intrcerebrally by the GD VII strain of Theiler' s virus. Theiler's virus, a mouse picornavirus, produces a paralytic disease and the predominate histopathological findings is necrosis of motor neurons resembling MND.
