Symptom management and nurses’ role in interstitial cystitis/ painful bladder syndrome

Abstract

Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome is a chronic and progressive disease of the lower urinary tract, characte- rized by chronic pelvic pain, urinary frequency and urgency. The selection of appropriate treatment methods and effective management of the symptoms are of great importance in this syndrome which has a negative effect on patients’ quality of life, sexual and mental well-being and which interferes with daily activities of the individual. The purpose of this review is to provide nurses with updated information on interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome and to elucidate the nurses’ role and the methods used in the management of the symptoms which negatively affect patients’ lives.

Özet

İntertisiyel sistit ya da ağrılı mesane sendromu, kronik pelvik ağrı, idrar sıklığı ve sıkışmanın görüldüğü alt üriner sistemin kronik ve ilerleyici bir hastalığıdır. Hastanın yaşam kalitesini, cinsel ve mental durumunu olumsuz yönde etkileyen ve günlük aktivitelerini yerine getirmesini önleyen bu hastalıkta, uygun tedavi yöntemlerinin kullanılması ve gelişen semptomlar ile etkin şekilde baş edilebilmesi önemlidir. Bu derlemenin amacı, hemşirelere interstiyel sistit/ağrılı mesane sendromu ile ilgili güncel bilgileri aktarmak ve hastaların yaşamını olumsuz yönde etkileyen hastalığın semptomlarının kontrolünde kullanılan yöntemleri ve hemşirenin rolünü ortaya koymaktır.
