Effect of Smoking on Disability for Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this survey is to investigate the effect of smoking ondisability with the patients diagnosed as multple sclerosis.Methods: In this survey the relation between the smoking of 128 patients(74 female, 54 male; age avarage 39) diagnosed as ms according to McDonald criterions in the Neorology Clinic of Istanbul Education and Researchhospital and their Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) are compared. Results: There were 54 female and 74 male patients. The age avarage is 39.It is established that the EDSS level of 37% of the patients was 0-3.0, 14.1%of them was 3.0-5.0 and 48% of them was >5.0. 61 of the patients werenonsmokers while 67 of them were smokers. It is determined that thereis a certain difference on the EDSS level of the nonsmokers and smokers.Conclusion: Smoking has a negative effect on disability with the multplesclerosis patients.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı Multple Skleroz (MS) tanısı almış hastalardasigara içiminin özürlülük üzerine etkisini araştırmaktır.Yöntemler: Bu çalışma Sağlık Bakanlığı İstanbul Eğitim ve Araştırma HastanesiNöroloji Kliniği'nde Mc Donald tanı kriterlerine göre Multple Skleroztanısı almış 128 hasta'nın (74 kadın, 54 erkek; ortalama yaş 39±10) sigaraiçimi ile expanded disability status scale'leri (EDSS) arasındaki ilişki karşılaştırıldı.Bulgular: Hastaların 54'ü (%42,2) erkek, 74'ü (%57,8) kadındı. Ortalamayaş 39±10 yıldır. Hastaların %37,5'inin EDSS'si 0-3,0, %14,1'inin EDSS'si 3,0-5,0 ve %48,4'ünün EDSS'si >5,0 olarak saptandı. Hastaların 61'i (%47,7) sigaraiçmiyor, 67'si (%52,3) sigara içiyordu. EDSS sigara içenle ve içmeyenlerarasında anlamlı olarak yüksek bulundu (p
