Abstract

Objective: Thyroid hormones, and especially lower total triiodothyronin (T3), and thyroxine levels have been suggested to be predictors of bacterial sepsis in children, and newborns. The relationship between hypothyroidism and the frequency of sepsis and causative bacteria is not known especially in premature infants. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between groups with and without congenital hypothyroidism (CH) among very- low-birth-weight (VLBW) (0,05). Conclusion: IIn our study, we found that hypothyroidism did not cause any risk of sepsis and meningitis in VLBW preterm infants. As is known during critical diseases, and sepsis thyroid hormones are suppressed, and this issue needs to be investigated further in the newborns in terms of sepsis, and its complications.
