Abstract

Tahert is an ancient city that founded by Ibadi Muslims in North Africa inthe second century AH. Today, the area is known as Algeria, and the townand the region lie south-west of the capital Algiers. Tahert, which is six-teen kilometres (km) far from the ancient Roman city of Tihert, served asthe capital of Rustamid dynasty for a century. Emazig tribal members aswell as others from other regions, including Iraq, who were mainly mem-bers of the Ibadi Muslim sect, settled in Tahert city. The city was originallyfounded by Abd al-Rahman Rustamid, an Ibadi theologian from GreaterPersia. Tahert city, which had the mosque, the market and the construc-tion centre located in the centre of the city, was a typical Islamic city.There were two walls surrounding the city, which radially opened out-ward from inside. Tahert city, which accepted as one of the major tradingcentres during that period, was also a centre of science and culture. Thecity, which had thousands of books in the city library as well as madrasasaccommodating hundreds of students, was regarded as one of the majordesirable attractions during that period of time. Tahert city was eventuallydestroyed by Ismailia Shia that ravaging North Africa during that periodof time. In this ancient city, the remains of which have reached our time,serious excavations have not (could have not) been made yet. Excavationsthat will be carried out in this historic city in the future will enable us tobetter recognise this ancient Islamic city.

Tahert İbâdî kökenli Müslümanlar tarafından Kuzey Afrikada, bu günküCezayir sınırları içerisinde hicri ikinci asırda kurulmuş kadim bir şehirdir.Eski Roma kenti Tiherte onaltı km. mesafede kurulan bu şehir yaklaşıkbir asır Rüstemilere başkentlik yapmıştır. Fars kökenli Abdurrahman b.Rüstem tarafından inşa edilen Taherte Emaziğ kökenli kabilelerin yanısıra başta Irak olmak üzere diğer bölgelerden de İbâdî mezhebine mensupMüslümanlar gelip yerleşmişlerdir. Merkezine cami, pazar, darul-imare-nin yerleştirildiği Tahert, tipik bir İslam kentidir. İçerden dışarıya doğrudairesel olarak açılan bu şehri kuşatan iki adet de sur bulunuyordu. Dö-neminin önemli ticaret merkezlerden biri olarak kabul edilen Tahert, aynızamanda bir ilim ve kültür yuvasıydı. Binlerce cildi havi kütüphanesi veyüzlerce talebeye ev sahipliği yapan medreseleriyle dönemin önemli çekimmerkezlerinden biri olarak kabul edilmektedir. Kuzey Afrikayı kasıp ka-vuran İsmaili Şiiler tarafından tahrip edilen Tahert, zamanla tarihe teslimolmuştur. Kalıntıları günümüze kadar ulaşan bu tarihi kentte henüz cid-di kazılar yapıl(a)mamıştır. Gelecekte burada yapılacak olan kazılar şehridaha iyi tanımamıza olanak sağlayacaktır.
