Tawaqquf as a Principle in Tafsir -The Sampling of Abu Mansur Maturidi

Abstract

The concept of tawaqquf has been defined as a method used as the final attempt to settle the coflictions among narrations mostly in the science of Hadith. However, this concept has a wide range of variations including both a scientific method and an attitude. Sometimes, Tawaqquf has been regarded as a condemned attitude while sometimes accepted as a method which must be adapted. In the science of tafsir, tawaqquf isn’t perceived as a concept that is usable and and applicable method principle. Some interpreters haven’t given it any attention in their works whereas some interpreters have seen it as an important principle of their methods. Interpreter Abu Mansur Maturidi attributed a great significance to tawaqquf. He defined the notion of tawaqquf as the truest method in many cases in terms of the aim of devine salutation and within the limit of Tawil. In this study, tawaqquf is analyzed within the frame of the work named ‘Ta’wilat al Qur’an’ by Abu Mansur Maturidi; references to the views of other interpretators are also included in the article. Therefore, the tawaqquf is analyzed in the scope of the science of tafsir; definition of the concept of tawaqquf, its content, importance and usage are evaluated and interpreted in this study.

Özet

Tevakkuf, daha çok hadis ilminde rivâyetler arası çelişkilerin giderilmesinde son çare olarakkullanılan bir yöntem olarak tanımlanmıştır. Oysa bu kavramın gerek ilmî bir yöntem gerekse birtavır olarak daha geniş bir yelpazesi vardır. Tevakkuf kimi zaman kınanan bir tavır kimi zaman dauyulması gereken bir tutum olarak görülmüştür. Tevakkuf, tefsir ilminde kavramsal kullanıma veuygulamalı bir yöntem ilkesine ulaşmamıştır. Kimi müfessirler onu yöntemlerinin önemli birilkesi olarak görürken kimi müfessirler eserlerinde ona hiç yer vermemişlerdir. Müfessir EbûMansûr Mâturîdî tevakkufa önem atfetmiştir. O, tevakkufu ilahî hitabın gayesi ve te’vîlin sınırlarıaçısından, pek çok durumda en doğru ilke olarak nitelemiştir. Bu çalışmada Ebû MansûrMâturîdî’nin Te’vîlâtü’l-Kur’ân adlı eseri çerçevesinde tevakkuf üzerine odaklanılmış, zamanzaman diğer müfessirlerin görüşlerine de başvurulmuştur. Dolayısıyla tevakkuf, tefsir ilmiçerçevesinde ele alınmış, tevakkuf kavramının tanımı, kapsamı, önemi, işletilişi hakkındadeğerlendirmelerde bulunulmuştur.
