The Approach of Zeccāc (d. 311/923) to the Narrations of Esbāb al-Nuzūl

Abstract

One of the important subjects of the ulûmu’l-Kur’ân, which examines the sciences that help to understand the Qur’an is the narrations of esbāb al-nuzūl. These narratives that convey the background that builds the revelation of verses on a reason, are knowledgesthat depict the environment of revelation. Because of the strong connection between revelation and its interlocutor, narrations of esbāb al-nuzūl are unignorable information for the determining the provisions contained in the verses and determining how these provisions are executed. Method scholars have emphasized that verses should not be expounded without having grasp of this knowledge. For this reason, one of the main sourcesin the commentaries is narrations of esbāb al-nuzūl from the first period. Zeccāc’s Me‘āni’l-Kur’ān, which is one of the early period commentary, is a linguistic work with a language and eloquence axis. In addition to this, Zeccāc’s Me‘āni’l-Ḳur’ān is a work in which most of the verses are expounded, unlike the other same qualified copyrights which have been written in this period. Tafsir narratives have been transfered selectively and thus the author's preferences have acquired qualification in the re’y (opinion) axis. One of the important sources of the work is esbāb al-nuzūl. In this study, Zeccāc's approach to narrations of esbāb al-nuzūl will be examined comparatively with the method works about the field.

Özet

Kur’ân’ı Kerim’in anlaşılmasına yardımcı olan ilimleri inceleyen Ulûmu’l-Kur’ân’ın önemli konularından biri de esbâb-ı nüzûl rivâyetleridir. Âyetlerin nüzûlünün bir sebep üzerine bina edilmesiarka planını aktaran bu rivâyetler, vahiy ortamını tasvir eden haberlerdir. Vahyin muhatap ile olankuvvetli bağı nedeniyle âyetlerin ihtiva ettiği hükümlerin tespiti ve bu hükümlerin ne şekilde icraedildiğinin belirlenmesinde esbâb-ı nüzûl rivâyetleri kayıtsız kalınamaz bilgilerdir. Usûl âlimleri bubilgilere vâkıf olmadan âyetlerin tefsir edilmemesi gerektiğini vurgulamışlardır. Bu nedenle, ilk dönemden itibaren tefsirlerde başvurulan temel kaynaklardan biri de esbâb-ı nüzûl rivâyetleri olmuştur. Erken dönemde te’lif edilen tefsirlerden biri olan Zeccâc’ın Me‘âni’l-Kur’ân’ı dil-belagat eksenlidilbilimsel bir çalışma olmasının yanında, bu dönemde kaleme alınan aynı nitelikteki diğer te’liflerinaksine âyetlerin büyük bir kısmının tefsir edildiği bir eserdir. Tefsir rivâyetleri aktarılırken seçicidavranılmış, böylece müellifin tercihleri re’y eksenli bir nitelik kazanmıştır. Eserin önemli kaynaklarından biri de esbâb-ı nüzûldür. Bu araştırmada, Zeccâc’ın esbâb-ı nüzûl rivâyetlerine yaklaşımıalanla ilgili usûl eserleriyle karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenecektir.
