Ontological and Epistemological Dimension of Ibn Sina's Understanding of Providence

Abstract

Concepts have an important place in philosophy. This is why, the meanings that philosophers ascribe to philosophical concepts are significant in order to be able to analyze and understand their philosophical thoughts. On the other hand, many of the philosophical debates are formed and used in the context of these concepts. Thus, a reliable, accurate concept analysis contributes to the process of understanding these debates. As providence is a concept that sheds light on the relationship between God-world and man, it is one of the basic concepts used in the philosophical literature. Ibn Sina, one of the great Islamic philosophers, used the concept of providence in his works. The philosopher placed this concept at the center of his philosophy. He defined this concept in details in a most of his important works and he makes explanations about it in the context of subject that he deals with. In other words, Ibn Sina gives place to providence in his philosophy with its ontological and epistemological aspects. In this article, definitions made by the Islamic thinker about providence will be made and the issues that are connected with this concept will be analyzed. It will also be attempted to show that, looking at the philosophy of Ibn Sina through the notion of providence can open a new horizon for us and ensure a better understanding of his philosophical thought. In addition to that, the goal of this study is to show that providence is a concept which summarizes the whole of the philosophy of Ibn Sina.

Felsefede kavramlar mühim bir yer teşkil etmektedir. Bu yüzden de filozofların felsefi kavramlara yükledikleri anlamlar, onların felsefi düşüncelerine nüfuz edilmesi açısından önem arzetmektedir. Ayrıca felsefi tartışmaların birçoğu, bu kavramlar ekseninde gerçekleşmektedir. Kavramların iyi bir şekilde tahlili bu tartışmaların anlaşılmasına da katkı sağlamaktadır. Tanrı-âleminsan ilişkisine ışık tutan bir kavram olması hasebiyle inâyet de felsefi literatürde kendine yeredinen temel kavramlardan biridir. Nitekim inâyet, İslam filozoflarından İbn Sinâ'nın düşüncesiiçerisinde geniş bir şekilde işlenmiştir. Filozof, bu kavramı felsefesinin temeline yerleştirmiştir. O,önemli eserlerinin birçoğunda bu kavramı detaylı bir şekilde tanımlamakta ve ele aldığı konu bağlamında ona ilişkin açıklamalar yapmaktadır. Başka bir deyişle İbn Sinâ inâyete ontolojik ve epistemolojik yönleriyle felsefesi içerisinde yer vermektedir. Bu makalede, filozofun inâyete ilişkintanımlarına ve bu kavramın bağlantılı olduğu konulara değinilecektir. Ayrıca inâyet kavramı üzerinden İbn Sinâ felsefesine bakmanın bize yeni bir ufuk açabileceği ve onun felsefi düşüncesinindaha iyi anlaşılmasına imkân sunabileceği gösterilmeye çalışılacaktır. Bununla birlikte inâyetin,İbn Sinâ felsefesinin bütününü özetleyen bir kavram olduğu da ortaya konulacaktır.
