Abstract

Sociologists have handled and studied religion in different ways. Researching and trying to understand the religious approaches of sociologists is very important for the studies of sociology of religion. In fact, this study focuses on Emile Durkheim's (1858-1917) views on the phenomenon of religion. The study, designed with the theoretical analysis technique that is one of the qualitative research methods, examines the nature of the relations between religion and society. Religion, understood by Durkheim as a system of symbols formed as a result of the awareness of society about itself, is a sociological phenomenon. Religion is a practical representation of various religious phenomena, ideals, symbols, and beliefs attributed to the sacred. For Durkheim, who ignores the metaphysical aspect of religion, creative power is the collective object of a society's beliefs and practices. Thus, Durkheim understands and explains the phenomenon of religion, in a way, as the worship of society and the emergence of divinity through social solidarity. In Durkheim's thought, the concept of society is sanctified and portrayed in a metaphysical character. Truth is a discourse or a situation that manifests in the collective consciousness of society. Durkheim's approach to religious life from a structural-functional perspective influenced the representatives of the British school of social anthropology, French structuralism and symbolic anthropology in later years. This study, which also contributes to give a different direction and acceleration to the debates about secularization, individualization or the decrease of the visibility of religion in the social field, which is frequently discussed nowadays, tries to eliminate an important deficiency in the field.
