COLLECTIVE ACTION FRAMES IN SOCIAL MEDIA: THE CASE OF UNITECYPRUSNOW

SOSYAL MEDYA ORTAMINDA TOPLUMSAL HAREKETLERİN ÇERÇEVELENMESİ: UNITECYPRUSNOW ÖRNEĞİ

Abstract

Social movements and the involvement of movements in new media environments has become an increasing focus of attention in social sciences in recent years. Social movements, with the effect on revolutions, which are considered to have succeeded especially with the new media environments, have rapidly progressed towards the understanding of new social movements with a great transformation in the past years. Bi-communal Cyprus is dealt with in this study with the acceptance of the understanding that social movements are a form of expression frequently used by citizens and activists, especially in conflict societies. The aim of this study is to address the bi-communal UniteCyprusNow movement within the framework of social movements and collective action frame, which has become increasingly heard and growing in recent years. In the study, content analysis was applied for a total of 261 posts that the bicommunal UniteCyprusNow movement made from June 1st 2017 to December 31st 2020, when it first posted on its official Instagram page. In the mention analysis, the shares in 9 sub-categories were examined by taking into account the coding schedule included in the Collective Action Frames conceptualization of Benford and Snow (2000). According to the prominent findings of the study, the themes of peace, solution and unification came to the fore in the sharing of the bi-communal UniteCyprusNow movement in a way that supports its own ideologies. While the use of videos, posters, photographs and notices in his posts attracted attention, it was noted that he shared a solution oriented towards the main purpose of the movement in his interaction with other activist movements.In addition to all these, multilingualism and diversity are also in the foreground in the sharing of the bi-communal movement. For this reason, the movement is a highly interactive formation that appeals to citizens living across the island via social media.

Özet

Toplumsal hareketler ve hareketlerin yeni medya ortamlarında yer alması sosyal bilimlerde son yıllarda artan bir ilgi odağı haline gelmiştir. Özellikle yeni medya ortamlarıyla birlikte başarıya ulaştığı kabul edilen devrimlerinde etkisiyle toplumsal hareketler geçen yıllar içerisinde büyük bir dönüşümle yeni toplumsal hareketler anlayışına doğru hızla ilerlemiştir. Toplumsal hareketlerin özellikle çatışan toplumlarda vatandaşlar ve aktivistler tarafından sıklıkla başvurulan ifade biçimi olduğu anlayışının kabulü ile bu çalışmada çatışan iki toplumlu Kıbrıs ele alınmıştır. Bu yolla çalışmanın amacını, son yıllarda artan bir ivme ile sesini duyuran ve büyüyen iki toplumlu UniteCyprusNow hareketinin toplumsal hareketler ve toplumsal hareket çerçevesinde ele alınması oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada, iki toplumlu UniteCyprusNow hareketinin resmi Instagram sayfası üzerinden ilk paylaşım yaptığı tarih 1 Haziran 2017’den 31 Aralık 2020 tarihine kadar yapmış olduğu toplam 261 paylaşıma yönelik içerik analizi uygulanmıştır. Söz konusu analizde Benford ve Snow (2000)’in Collective Action Frames kavramsallaştırmasında yer alan kodlama cetveli dikkate alınarak 9 alt-kategoride paylaşımlar irdelenmiştir. Çalışmada öne çıkan bulgulara göre, iki toplumlu UniteCyprusNow hareketinin kendi ideolojilerini destekleyen şekilde paylaşımlarında barış, çözüm ve birleşme temaları öne çıkmıştır. Paylaşımlarında video, afiş, fotoğraf ve bildiri kullanımı dikkat çekerken diğer aktivist hareketlerle olan etkileşiminde hareketin ana çıkış amacı doğrultusundaki çözüme yönelik paylaşımlar olması kaydedilmiştir.
