Abstract

Ninety two coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from various clinical specimens were investigated for slime production and antibiotic resistance. Slime production was tested with both macro-tube method and quantitative micro method. The micro-test optical density reading for these isolates (mean + SD) were 0.440 ±0.141 and 0.171 ±0.049 (p < 0.0001) for the macro-test positive and negative groups, respectively. The incidence of resistance to methicillin was 33.7 %, and beta-lactamase production was detected in 50 % of slime positive strains. Slime-positive strains were more resistant to antimicrobial agents than slime-negative ones (p < 0.02).
