Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of onychomycosis in diabetes meiiitus patients. For this purpose, the nail scrapings of 40 patients with diabetes meiiitus showing deformation in their fingernails and 40 randomly chosen healthy controls were investigated. In 34 (85 %) patients with diabetes meiiitus and six (15 %) healthy people, dermatophytes and/or yeasts grew. Of the 34 fungus strains isolated from diabetic patients 16 (47 %) were Trichophvton rubrum and seven (20 %) were Trichophvton mentaarophvtes. The rates of isolation of only Candida albicans. C. albicans + T. rubrum. and Ç. albicans + T. mentaarophvtes were 1.5 % (five cases), 12 % (four cases) and 6 % (two cases), respectively. In healthy controls the isolation rates were as follows: T. rubrum 50 % (three cases), T. mentaarophvtes 33 % (two cases), and J2. albicans + T. rubrum 17 % (one case).
