Abstract
The ability of uropathogens to adhere to the surface of a prosthetic material is an important factor in the development of infection. In this study, the adherence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus epidermidis to four different catheters that are regularly used in clinical practice are compared. Both P. aeruginosa and S. epidermidis showed the greatest adherence to Ultrasil Foley catheter and the least adherence to Porges silicon-coated latex catheter. In all catheters, P. aeruginosa showed a stronger adherence than S. epidermidis. The advances in catheter design may help to reduce the urinary infections due to urethral catheterisation.
