Abstract

In this study, the prevalence and causative agents of superficial mycotic infections were investigated in 457 soldiers in Adana for their army service. Superficial mycoses were found in a total of 104 (22.8 %) patients; 84 (18.4 %) dermatophytosis, 13 (2.9 %) candidiasis and seven (1.5 %) pityriasis versicolor. As causative agents Trichophyton mentagrophytes (50.5 %), T. rubrum (43.0 %) and Epidermophyton floccosum (6.5 %) from dermatophytes; Candida tropicalis (42.9 %), C. glabrata (35.7 %), C. albicans (14.3 %) and C. parapsilosis (7.1 %) from yeasts were isolated. Although superficial mycoses were more common in soldiers that came from the Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia Regions, the period they served did not have any effect on the prevalence.
