Isolation and identification of campylobacter species from stool specimens sent for bacteriologic culture

Abstract

To determine the incidence of Campylobacter infection in the Kayseri Region, Campylobacter was investigated in 2127 stool specimens collected between January 1 and December 31, 1995. Campylobacter species were isolated in 58 (2.7 %) specimens 47 (81 %) of which were identified as Campylobacter jejuni and 11 (19 %) as Campylobactercoli In the same period, the percentage of Shigella and Salmonella isolation from fecal samples were 5.6 % and 1.1 %, respectively. It was observed that Campylobacter isolation reached a peak in the summer and Campylobacter diarrhoea was seen mostly in children under five years of age.

Özet

Kayseri ve yöresinde Campylobacter'lerin varlığını ve oranını belirlemek için 01.01.1995-31.12.1995 tarihlerini kapsayan bir yıllık süre içinde 2127 dışkı örneği incelendi. Bu örneklerin 58 (% 2.7)'inde Campylobacter spp izole edildi. Bu izolatların 47 (% 81)'si C. jejuni ve 11 (% 19)'i C. coli olarak identifiye edildi.
