Medical waste collecting and transporting at hospitals in Manisa and relevant knowledge, attitude and practices of the nurses working in these hospitals

Abstract
In this descriptive study, it was planned to determine the status of hospitals' medical waste collecting, transporting and eliminating in Manisa. Data on knowledge and practices of the nurses about medical waste were also obtained. The items based on the "Regulation about Medical Waste Management" were included in the hospital questionnaire. Questions, probing knowledge and practices of nurses about medical waste were included the nurse questionnaire. It was detected that some control measures mentioned in the "Regulation about Medical Waste Management" had been taken by the hospitals. But neither of the hospitals were found to be perfect in collecting and transporting processes. Of the nurses 47.3 % had been trained about hospital waste. Of the study population 24.5 % expressed that they needed education on hospital waste. The nurses who had been trained on medical waste were found to collect the medical wastes more properly compared with the others. Manisa State Hospital and Psychiatry Hospital were not sufficient in proper waste collecting compared with the other hospitals. It was seen that medical waste was not collected and eliminated properly by the Manisa Municipality.

Manisa Kent Merkezi'ndeki hastanelerde tıbbi atıkların toplanması, taşınması ve depolanması durumunu saptamak amacı ile tanımlayıcı çalışma yürütülmüştür. Bu hastanelerde çalışan hemşirelerin tıbbi atıklar konusundaki bilgi ve davranış düzeyleri de saptanmıştır. Hastane anketi tıbbi atıklarla ilgili yönetmelikteki parametreleri, hemşire anketi ise hemşirelerin tıbbi atık konusundaki bilgi ve davranışlarını içermektedir. Hemşirelerin % 47.3' ü tıbbi atıklarla ilgili eğitim almış olup hemşirelerin % 24.57 tıbbi atıklar konusunda bilgi gereksinimi olduğunu belirtmiştir. Tıbbi atıklar konusunda eğitim alan hemşirelerin, bu konuda eğitim almamış hemşirelere göre tıbbi atık toplanması konusundaki davranışları daha iyi düzeydedir. Manisa Devlet Hastanesi ve Manisa Akıl ve Ruh Sağlığı Hastanesi'nde tıbbi atıkların toplanması konusunda diğer hastanelere göre daha yanlış uygulamalar söz konusudur. Manisa Belediyesi tarafından hastanelerden toplanan tıbbi atıkların uygun şekilde toplanmadığı ve bertaraf edilmediği saptanmıştır.
