Abstract
This study aimed at determining the causative agents of chronic sinusitis. Sinus biopsy specimens obtained with functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) from 60 patients with chronic sinusitis were microbiologically examined. Thirty-six microorganisms from 26 (43%) patients were isolated as causative agents. Of these 26 patients, bacteria grew in 12 (20%), fungi in seven (12%) and bacteria with fungi in another seven (12%). The most commonly isolated agents were Staphylococcus aureus among aerobic bacteria, Peptostreptococcus spp. among anaerobic bacteria and Penicillium and Aspergillus spp. among fungi.
