Abstract

In order to determine the prevalence of nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) of the male in the Elazığ Region of Turkey, NGU was investigated in 120 patients from March 1996 to January 1997. Urethral secretion specimens were inoculated into the selective media from all patients. Also for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis antigens, a rapid immünoassay was used. Ureaplasma urealyticum was isolated from 38 (31.6 %) of the specimens. Chlamydia trachomatis antigens were detected in 21 (17.5 %). Chlamydia trachomatis and U. urealyticum were present simultaneously in 10 (8.3 %) cases, and Trichomonas vaginalis was detected in one (0.8 %) of 120 specimens. It was concluded that U. urealyticum was the most frequent agent of NGU in males in the region.
