Abstract

The diseases that cause xerostomia, by decreasing the antimicrobial factors in the saliva, facilitates the Candida colonization in oral mucosa. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of oral Candida colonization due to xerostomia, and slgA levels in the saliva of the patients using psychotropic drugs for a period of time. The study group consisted of 36 patients of psychiatry outpatient clinic who were using psychotropic drugs at least for a month and 36 age and sex matched apparently healthy individuals. Unstimulated saliva samples of patient and control groups were taken and slgA levels were measured with nepholometry. Also the oral mucosa swab samples were examined by mycological methods. In 30.6% of the patient group and in 11.1% of the control group Candida colonization was present (p
