Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the seroepidemiology of Lyme disease in rural and urban Antalya, a city in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. By MicroELISA 22.1 % of the rural and 6.4 % of the urban population were shown to have anti-Borrelia burgdorferi Ig G antibodies. Sixteen of 62 positive sera were tested for anti-B. burgdorferi IgG by Western blotting. Twelve (%80.6) of 16 sera were accepted as positive. Ticks were collected from goats and sheep which are in close contact with people in rural regions. Of ticks 80.4 % were typed as Ixodes ricinus. This study suggests that Lyme disease might be considered as endemic in rural areas because the prevalence of antibodies was high compared with that of the control group (p= 0.0002), and most of the ticks were identified as I. ricinus.
