Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate prospectively catheter related infections in internal medicine clinics for a period of six months. Catheter related infections were diagnosed by semiquantitative cultire method and/or simultaneous quantitative blood cultures. Local infection rates due to peripheral venous catheters (PVC) and central venous catheters (SVC) were found 4.8 % and 33 %, respectively. The detected catheter related sepsis rates was 0.4% for PVC and 3.7 % for SVC. Coagulase-negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus were the most frequently isolated causative agents.
